We have a lot of clients call and ask us how they can replace their existing stairs. So, we’ve put together a guide on how to do just that!

With many properties having been built in the 1900’s there is a fair chance that the staircases have worn, are too steep or in some instances not even up to code.  Replacing your existing staircase is a great way to refresh your home, but there are a few key steps you need to follow...

Yes, tell me – where do I start?

1. Consider your existing design.

It is important to note that you need to be aware of the existing staircase and its layout before embarking on this process. If your current stairs have a corner, mid-landing or even a 180° turn, then these features may be a ‘must’ to include in your new staircase.

2. Speak with an architect and builder.

An architect or builder is almost always the best person to contact first. The architect will be able to draw up plans for a new staircase and they can suggest the best fits and alternatives. The builder will be the one that removes the existing staircase so that you can minimise any unnecessary damage to your existing internal walls and floors. Many builders will also install the new set for you as well, so starting with the architect/builder means you can also get an idea of the overall project investment up front.

3. Check with your local council.

There may be by-laws in place that restrict changes or have specific safety requirements for new staircases. It always pays to be aware of these before embarking on the renovation process. This will help you avoid costly mistakes in the long-run.

4. Contact your stair manufacturer – That’s Us!

At this point we can review your plans and provide you with an initial quote. We can then measure the space, finalise your quote and book time in for the manufacture of your new stairs. You may possibly miss this step if your builder is the one organising the manufacturing with us.

5. Talk to your builder.

Yes, you will need to speak with your builder again. Ensure you are in constant contact with your builder so that you know what is going on with your renovation and installation.

6. Installation.

Your chosen staircase will now be ready to be installed. We will liaise with yourself or your builder to book this in, or your builder may have included this with their portion of the work.
