Frequently Asked Questions

30 January 2020

Got a question?  Check our list or call our team any time for a friendly and fast answer.

If your query is a technical one, please check our resources page or call our team.

When can I get a site measure done?

We can measure as soon as your first floor frames are in place.

Do you offer an installation service?

Carpet grade, timber & exterior stairs are mostly installed by your builder, however in some situations we will be able to include installation with our quote.

For feature steel stairs, installation is usually included with our quote.  Read more on our process pages for builders, homeowners, developers or architects.

I want to replace my existing balustrades, is this something you can help with?

Our team is mostly involved with new home builds, or extensive renovations where you are also working with an architect and builder.  If you are looking to get your balustrade replaced, please contact one of our team so we can gather information about what you require, and advise whether or not it's a project we'll be able to work with you on.

How much do stairs cost?

That depends on which spec you order!  Most stairs can be put into three main brackets:

Carpet quality staircase - typically $800 - $1500 + GST for a standard design

Solid timber staircase - typically $2500 - $8000 + GST for a standard design

Floating steel staircase - typically $25,000 - $35,000 + GST for a fully installed staircase (note, this also includes balustrades & handrails)

As with any custom made product like stairs, there is a lot of variation so we always recommend you send us your plans and required specification so we can provide an accurate quotation for you.

What are the biggest impacts on stair cost?

A number of things will affect your stair cost:

  • The stair layout (straight stairs are usually the least expensive)
  • The materials you choose (i.e. carpet grade or a feature timber)
  • The stair dimensions (i.e. width, height and horizontal going)
  • Extra details such as cut stringers, laminated stringers, sloping risers, bullnose treads and other small extras

Changing any of these items could have an impact on your stair quote.

I see you're based in Wellington, but my project is in Queenstown/Christchurch/Hamilton/Tauranga/Auckland.  Do you work in my area?

Yes, we work New Zealand wide.  If you view our gallery you will see examples of projects we have completed all around New Zealand.  Please contact us with plans or to book a site visit and we'll see how we can work with you for a great outcome.

The council is asking me for a PS1, is this something you can help with?

Yes, sometimes!  We have a small range of PS1s available for balustrades and stairs.  To request a PS1 you will need to send us a copy of your plans and any RFIs the council have sent to you (if you have already submitted your project).  We reserve the right to assess each project on an individual basis as to whether or not we can provide a PS1.  In order to send you a PS1, we usually require either a confirmed order for the supply of the project, a small non-refundable deposit to be paid, or for you to sign a memorandum of understanding that if the project proceeds, you will contract us to complete the work for you.
